“We were targeted. This was very specific. It wasn’t random."

The daughter of Rhode Island shooter Robert Dorgan said her father’s attack was driven by anger against his family and was not a random act of violence.

Amanda Wallace-Hubbard told WPRI on Tuesday, “I just want to make sure people understand this was one person’s vendetta against their family.”

“We were targeted. This was very specific. It wasn’t random,” she said.

Dorgan shot and killed his adult son, Aidan, and his ex-wife, Rhonda, during a high school hockey game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena. He was attending the game while his son Colin was playing on the rink. Authorities said he was armed with a Glock 10mm handgun and a Sig Sauer P226. He also wounded his ex-wife’s parents and a family friend.

The shooting was only brought to an end when a bystander tackled Dorgan, after which he turned one of the guns on himself. Wallace-Hubbard, who is Dorgan’s daughter from another relationship, said she feared her family would be targeted next had Dorgan not been stopped.

“Until that good Samaritan incapacitated him, I really feared that my sons were next,” she explained. “I can’t thank him enough. I’m certain my sons and I are alive because of him.”

Dorgan identified as transgender and underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2020. He was reportedly wearing women’s clothing at the time of the shooting. Following the attack, an account believed to belong to Dorgan on X surfaced that included a post expressing anger against those who label transgender-identifying Democratic lawmaker Sarah McBride a man.

“Keep bashing us. But do not wonder why we Go BERSERK,” the post read.

Dorgan and his ex-wife had been involved in a lengthy divorce battle leading up to the shooting. Rhonda filed for divorce in 2020, initially citing Dorgan’s “gender reassignment surgery, narcissistic and personality disorder traits” as the reasons. However, she later changed the reason to “irreconcilable differences.” The pair had been married nearly 30 years before filing for divorce.
