Members of the Tren de Aragua gang have been trying to force their way into the US before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. The armed gang members engage in mobbing tactics to overwhelm border agents and breach the crossings, attacking those who stand in their way.

Last week, a mob of gang members swarmed a border gate at El Paso, Texas, the New York Post reported, citing a memo from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The gang members are expected to attempt another violent mass border crossing on New Year's Day. The gang is seeking to push more members into the United States before the border is shut down under Trump's presidency.

"You’re seeing that violence at the border because they know that it’s going to change in 27 days. It’s going to change. It’s going to be different, and they’re going to be sought after," said Victor Avila, a former Homeland Security Investigations agent.

"I think that TdA is coming in with an instruction from their home country. And I think that their ideology is more of a terrorist ideology of destruction," Avila added. "They hate the United States just like terrorists do and they will kill, destroy, take over businesses, take over stores and take over apartment complexes, do whatever they have to do to destroy our way of life in the US."

An anonymous source informed Texas authorities that the gang would "continue every night" at around 3 am in their border crossing attempts and that the gang wants to "cause harm" to the Texas National Guard, the outlet reported.

The source reportedly added that the gang wants to do so “especially when they are left alone with no agents” to call on for help. Texas authorities have been firing more pepper balls at groups trying to breach the border and the uptick in activity is just a few miles away from an attempted border breach last year when around 200 illegal immigrants started a riot at in El Paso. During that attack, some of the illegal immigrants violently assaulted National Guard troops in the scuffle and many of those who engaged in the riot have been set free in the US.
