The mayor said Richmond believes in the value of being "more welcoming."
Mayor Levar Stoney of Richmond, Virginia posted a clip online of him telling former President Donald Trump that he is "not welcome" to the city ahead of Trump's campaign stop in the area even though he touted the city as being "more welcoming."
The mayor was ticked off that Trump would be coming to the town for a stop and decided to oppose it publicly ahead of the rally.
"I'm here to remind folks that President Trump has chosen Richmond as a campaign stop," Stoney began. "And I'm wanting President Trump to know this, that your rhetoric of division and hate and destruction our democracy is not welcome here in Richmond, we reject those values."
Stoney went on to say that Richmond's values were being "inclusive" and that the city is a "welcoming" place for people to come.
He added that he will be "supporting Joe Biden for reelection" instead and encouraged his audience to "get out there to support the [current] president."
The Democratic Naitonal Convention also hosted a press conference in Richmond on Saturday ahead of the rally to oppose the former president.
Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (D-VA) attended and spoke, saying, “As Donald Trump comes to Richmond today, we are reminding Virginia voters that if we get another Trump term in office, reproductive freedom will be under attack," according to ABC8 News.
Trump's rally is reportedly scheduled for 6 p.m. in Virginia local time at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
