Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his government will be increasing the price on pollution by $15 a tonne per year at a press conference on Friday, joined by ministers Jonathan Wilkinson, Steven Guilbeault, and Catherine McKenna.
Prices will continue to increase every year, starting in 2022, until carbon reaches $170 per tonne in 2030.
"With this plan, Canadians will exceed our 2030 greenhouse gas emissions target under the Paris Agreement. We will establish the building blocks to establish net-zero by 2050, and we will create long term, and sustainable communities in every region of this country," said Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson.
Additional investments are expected to come, said Wilkinson, including advancements to the rebate program for zero emission vehicles. $186,079,748 in rebates were paid in the program's first year. Taxpayers have also "paid more than $70 million to subsidize the purchase of California electric cars," according to Blacklock's Reporter.
Implementation of the Trudeau Liberals' plans amount to $15 billion, in addition to the $60 billion previously committed.
Trudeau warned Canadians that "there is there is no vaccine" against climate change.
"There is no vaccine against a polluted planet," said Trudeau. "We're paying the price already with record storms, wildfires, floods, and heat waves, which all carry real economic costs and real risks to our health."
"To accelerate our efforts, we're investing 15.2 billion through this plan, with more to come... Our plan will improve the energy efficiency of homes and buildings to cut energy waste, while also helping people cut down on their bills," said Trudeau.
Trudeau said January will see a plan for "permanent public transit funding," and "starting in 2023, we will put even more money in the pockets of Canadians by increasing the price on pollution by $15 a tonne, per year."
According to figures by Global News, Canadians can "expect to pay roughly an extra 39.6 cents per litre of gasoline by 2030."
