The total cost of the COVID-19 furlough plan for federal government employees was an astonishing $1.3 billion, according to Blacklock's Reporter. This program was awarded to those who couldn't work from home.
On average, furloughed federal employees took home $10,000. This includes both salaries and benefits. These findings were published in a report by the Budget Office.
133,013 of 300,540 federal employees made furlough claims in 86 of the 90 departments. The real number, however, is probably even more significant than this. The report stated that "leave was likely underreported by many organizations."
Per employee, costs averaged out at $481 per day. Despite this sizeable figure, Liberal MPs have claimed that there is no evidence that the system was abused.
The Liberals' chief whip, for instance, said that his "colleagues insinuate that certain individuals were sitting around doing nothing."
"I in fact know that’s false," he claimed.
The government justified the expense of the program by saying that they "made sure to take care of our employees since the start of the pandemic."
"At the beginning of the pandemic we sent everyone home to comply with public health directives and to ensure the safety of our employees and communities," they added.
