The Trudeau family has known the Peter Green family since the 1970s when then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau stayed at the location.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family vacations are again under scrutiny after a report revealed he stayed at a luxury resort in Jamaica that is owned by a prominent and generous donor to the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation.
Radio-Canada reported Tuesday that the Trudeau family stayed at the Prospect estate – a favorite spot for the rich and famous – from Dec. 26, 2022, to Jan. 4, 2023, in an opulent villa next to the Caribbean Sea.
The Trudeau family has known the Peter Green family since the 1970s when then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau stayed at the location.
Both the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) refused to say whether they knew the Green family is a Foundation donor when they reportedly approved the trip for Trudeau, according to Radio-Canada.
The PMO would not comment on whether Trudeau paid for vacation himself or stayed at taxpayer expense.
But the tab for Canadians amounts to at least $162,000 when the cost of security and other government employees assigned to the trip are factored in.
The Green family sponsors the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Scholarship which offers a bursary of up to $180,000 for three years of education.
PMO spokeswoman Ann-Clara Vaillancourt told Radio-Canada that Trudeau adhered to the "regular practice” of flying to his private destination on a government Challenger jet and then reimbursing the public purse for the equivalent of a commercial flight cosThe report is doubly damaging for Trudeau as he attempts to distance himself from the Foundation, where the entire board of directors recently resigned when it was learned a donation from the Communist Chinese government was not returned as had been previously reported.
Trudeau has also been accused of being a wealthy elitist who cannot comprehend the mounting cost of living difficulties for ordinary Canadians. In 2016, Trudeau vacationed at a private island owned by the Aga Khan, whose own foundation had received $50 million in Canadian federal funding that same year. The RCMP considered charging Trudeau with fraud over that sojourn but decided it wasn’t in “the public’s interest” to do so.
The Post Millennial reached out to Conservative ethics critic Michael Barrett for comment but did not receive a reply.
