Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce the extension of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) on Tuesday, according to CTV News.

The extension will allow those who applied for the first round of CERB to continue to receive checks after the original 16-week eligibility period.

CERB is penned to end entirely on October 2.

Trudeau had announced changes to the CERB on Monday, saying that the government was “working on a solution to extend the benefit for people who can’t return to work yet.”

“If you’re having trouble finding a job, you shouldn’t also be worrying about whether you’ll hit the limit of your CERB benefits,” the prime minister said.

Over one million Canadians have ended their CERB payments, having already gone back to work or returned to work via the Trudeau Liberals' wage subsidy program.

Over $43.5 billion dollars has been spent on the CERB, providing over eight million Canadians payments of $2,000 a month.

The announcement comes as the Liberals look to gain support from the NDP, as Trudeau's Liberals aim to fast track their latest spending measures.
