The scandal surrounding the WE Organization was already looking terrible for Justin Trudeau.
Almost immediately from the time the government announced the nearly $1 billion contract, things started going downhill.
First, there were questions about why the contract would go to a charity so closely-connected to Trudeau and his family.
Then, the PMO and the WE Charity gave contradictory versions of how the process of awarding the contract went.
The PMO claimed it was a totally hands-off decision, while the WE co-founder said he spoke to the PMO about it, before hilariously backtracking and claiming he ‘misspoke.’
Then, with scrutiny mounting, the contract was stopped. But again, they couldn’t get their story straight. The government initially said it was a "mutual decision," while Trudeau said WE chose to withdraw.
Which is it?
Then, we learned that Trudeau failed to recuse himself from the "cabinet decision" to award the contract to WE. And of course, "cabinet decision’ means ‘Prime Minister’s decision." This was already terrible for the government.
It was already a huge problem that the PM was directly in control of making a decision to give a gigantic government contract to an organization so closely tied to him and his family.
And I’m not even mentioning the whole issue of how Trudeau claimed only WE could administrate the program despite many already-existing federal programs that do almost exactly the same thing. Nope, I’m not even going to mention that.
Yet, it turns out things are far worse.
It has now been revealed that Justin Trudeau’s mother & brother received money from the WE Charity.
In total, Trudeau’s mom received $250,000 for speaking at events, while his brother Alexandre received $32,000.
So, we now have a direct record of WE giving money to Trudeau’s family members in the years leading up to Trudeau’s decision to give them a massive government contract.
Additionally, WE had been in turmoil before this, with many staff having been laid off and huge turnover among the upper levels of the organization.
At this point, this is looking more and more like Trudeau trying to use taxpayer dollars to directly intervene and prop up an organization that had given money to his own families, led by people who supported his political campaigns, and had given him a big platform.
It’s the kind of attitude you see when someone feels they are above the rules and above the law, and who thinks that taxpayer dollars are their own personal plaything, having zero respect for the Canadian people.
This scandal has now blown up in a big way, and Trudeau’s already tarnished ethical reputation has fallen even lower.
