Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the federal government has withdrawn $679 million in funding for a dozen offshore wind projects.

The rescinded funds apply to several projects nationwide, with the largest cancelled project being the Humboldt Bay Offshore Wind project in northern California, where the government withdrew $427 million. The planned terminal would have been part of California’s goal to build 25 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2045, according to a report by CNBC.

The administration said the money will instead go toward “real infrastructure” and “restoring American maritime dominance.”

“Wasteful, wind projects are using resources that could otherwise go towards revitalizing America’s maritime industry,” Duffy said in a public statement. “Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg bent over backwards to use transportation dollars for their Green New Scam agenda while ignoring the dire needs of our shipbuilding industry. Thanks to President Trump, we are prioritizing real infrastructure improvements over fantasy wind projects that cost much and offer little.”

President Trump has repeatedly criticized wind energy, claiming windmills are “ruining the country.” At a White House Cabinet meeting earlier this week, he said, “We’re not allowing any windmills to go up.”

“They’re ruining our country. They’re ugly, they don’t work, they kill your birds. They’re bad for the environment,” Trump said. “And if you look at them from a house, your house is worth less than 50 percent.”

The Department of Transportation added in its statement that the department, as well as its Maritime Administration, is focused on “rebuilding America’s shipbuilding capacity, unleashing more reliable, traditional forms of energy, and utilizing the nation’s bountiful natural resources to unleash American energy.”
