These cities being targeted for early enforcement operations include Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and the Washington DC area, several sources told NBC News.
Chicago was set to be the first city hit, but that operation has reportedly been placed on hold, two sources with knowledge of the plans told the outlet. The sources stressed that the operation has not been canceled, just that Chicago will no longer be the first city targeted.
Trump Administration Border Czar Tom Homan told ABC News, "We're reviewing any plans in Chicago because of the leak," saying news reports on the operation may put officer safety at risk.
In November, Los Angeles’ city council voted to make the city a sanctuary city and prohibit law enforcement from cooperating with federal authorities on immigration enforcement. Ahead of the vote, Mayor Karen Bass said, "We will stand with the immigrant community and whatever policy they put forward, we will make sure that people in Los Angeles are not hurt and families are not separated."
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said in November, "We're still a welcoming city. That did not change on Nov. 5, and it doesn't change based upon who's in the White House and whether you are seeking refuge from Central South America or the continent of Africa. This country has to remain a welcoming space for new arrivals and for immigrants."
