The small town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire has counted their ballots for the 2024 election and GOP nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris are tied 3-3. The tiny township was won by both President Joe Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016. Each nominee for 2024 received three votes.

In 2020, Dixville Notch went unanimously for Joe Biden. In 2016, Hillary Clinton held the majority, though Trump got two votes as did Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson. A recent poll showed Trump taking a slight lead in New Hampshire during last days of October.

The unincorporated township in northern New Hampshire, just along the border of Canada, takes to the polls just after midnight on Election Day, a tradition stretching back to 1960. The residents of the tiny town meet up at the Balsams Hotel, which is currently closed and awaiting redevelopment. Because the town is so small, they are able to vote and count their ballots before most polling places in the country have even opened, per CNN.

This year's voters were comprised of four Republicans and two independents, and the ballots were split down the center. After the votes are counted, the results are announced. Although it is such a small-scale precinct, because of its significance of being first, it is a destination for reporters, who will often be more numerous than the voters.

The practice, per Les Otten who is leading the redevelopment of the Balsams Hotel, said the practice is "a civics lesson for the country."

"If we can help people get out and understand that voting is an important part of their right as an American citizen, that’s perhaps the key to what we’re doing," Otten said.

"As long as we’re here and we’re property owners and we have, you know, our toothbrush in our bathrooms, we might as well exercise our right to vote," Otten added.
