Among those surveyed in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, the current president garnered just 43 percent support, while his predecessor saw 47 percent support.
According to the poll, the 4 percent lead is seen both in a head-to-head matchup between the two, as well as on ballot that includes Trump, Biden, and Green, Libertarian, and No Labels candidates.
Of the 5,023 people surveyed, 1,323 identified as independent. When asked who they would vote for if third-party candidates were included, Biden trailed behind Trump by 10 percent. In a situation where it was still a direct head-to-head, that number dropped to 8 percent.
The poll found that the main reason for the current president's lack of support is his economic policy, or "Bidenomics," as it's been termed. According to the poll, just 26 percent of voters in these states said they believed the economy had benefited under his presidency, while 49 percent disapproved of the policies his administration has put in place.
In contrast, fiscal policy was, and continues to be, one of the main driving forces for Trump's support. Just over half of those surveyed, 51 percent, said the American economy was better off under the previous administration.
Additionally, 49 percent of voters said they had faith that Trump could get the country's finances back in order, while just 35 percent said the same of Biden. For independent voters, trust in Biden was even less, at 25 percent.
In a statement to Axios following the publishing of the results, the Biden campaign noted that the election was still a year away, adding, "We'll win in 2024 by putting our heads down and doing the work, not by fretting about a poll."
The poll was conducted between October 5 and 10 of 5,023 registered voters, and has a margin of error of 1 percentage point.
