Just months before the first primaries and caucuses of the 2024 election, GOP frontrunner Donald Trump has a commanding lead over the rest of the Republican field, and even over Biden in a national election with a substantial margin of 48-41.
59 percent of voters said that Biden should not run for a second term, according to the Harvard/Harris poll, while 50 percent said the same for Trump. In a head-to-head rematch between the two, 48 percent of voters said they would cast their ballot for Trump, while 41 percent said they would vote for Biden. 11 percent of voters were unsure.
The Harvard/Harris poll found that a staggering 67 percent of voters would vote for Trump in the GOP primary. This is nearly 60 points over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who lies in second place at 9 percent. Coming in third place by a narrow margin is former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy is in fourth place with 5 percent, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie with 3 points for fifth.
When asked what their second choice would be, 28 percent of voters said that DeSantis would be their second choice. Ramaswamy received 18 percent support, and Haley tied for third place alongside those who were unsure, at 16 percent.
Overall, 65 percent of voters said they believe Trump will win the Republican primary nomination. 84 percent of GOP voters and 70 percent of independents responded as such, while 56 percent of Democrats said they believe he will lose.
In head-to-head matchups, 75 percent of voters said they would cast their ballot for Trump, compared to 25 percent who said they would vote for DeSantis, and against Haley, 81 percent said they would vote for Trump while 19 percent said they would vote for the former South Carolina leader.
If Trump is convicted in any of the many cases brought forth against him in 2023, 89 percent of those who said they would vote for Trump said they would still cast their ballot for the former president in the upcoming primaries.
When independent candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr is added into the mix, Trump still comes out on top, receiving 41 percent support to Biden’s 34 percent and Kennedy’s 17 percent.
The poll was conducted between November 15 and 16 of 2,851 registered voters nationwide.
