President Donald Trump launched a lawsuit against New York judge Juan Merchan for imposing a gag order on him in Alvin Bragg's alleged fraudulent business docs case. The case involves the recording of funds paid by Trump to his then-attorney in the lead up to the 2020 election, which were recorded as legal fees in Trump's records.
Bragg alleges that those funds were used by the attorney to pay porn star Stormy Daniels hush money over an alleged dalliance. The documents of Trump's suit "were placed under seal, though several outlets have reported that they pertain to the gag order," The Hill reports.
Trump brought the suit against Merchan on Monday ahead of the trial taking place next week. The order stops Trump from talking about staff at the court and Bragg's office, members of Merchan's family, and witnesses.
Trump has said before that some employees at Bragg's office have a conflict of interest in the case and that Merchan's daughter is politically motivated against the former president. Merchan's daughter was also paid about $4 million by Adam Schiff to push a narrative surrounding Russia collusion and Trump.
Merchan cited Trump's “uncontested record” of speaking publicly about those involved in other legal matters to impose the gag order.
"A New York appeals judge could preliminarily rule on Trump’s lawsuit against Merchan as soon as Monday, before the matter goes to a full five-judge panel to consider the request," the Hill reports.
After a March 25 hearing last month Trump made a press statement before the gag order was put in place the next day. During the briefing he said that at the courthouse “you had [Matthew] Colangelo... Remember this, Colangelo was a DOJ guy. He’s a Biden DOJ guy. Why is he in the Manhattan DA’s office trying the case?”
Colangelo was designated as a New Senior Counsel in December 2022 in Bragg's office.
