President Donald Trump as well as microchip manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) on Monday announced that the company will be making an investment of $100 billion into the US.

At the White House, Trump announced the investment, "Today, Taiwan Semiconductor is announcing that they'll be investing at least $100 billion in new capital in the United States over the next short period of time to build state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facilities."

The $100 billion is set to expand the US semiconductor industry and to advance cutting-edge chip technology with five chip manufacturing facilities.

Trump appeared alongside TSMC CEO CC Wei, who said that the investment is “going to create thousands of high paying jobs."

TSMC is the largest chip-making contractor in the world, and the announcement comes as the US has been heavily dependent on the manufacturing of semiconductors in other countries, such as Taiwan.

"We’re pleased to have an opportunity to meet with the President and look forward to discussing our shared vision for innovation and growth in the semiconductor industry, as well as exploring ways to bolster the technology sector along with our customers,” TSMC said in a statement, per the Wall Street Journal.

The company started operations in the US in 2020 in the state of Arizona, saying it would build the plant there with $12 billion. Over the last few years, that project has expanded into a site with an investment of $65 billion and mass production of chips started in 2024.

The $100 billion will expand on the company's operations even more after it started producing the chips last year.

“Semiconductors are the backbone of the 21st century economy. And really, without the semiconductors, there is no economy,” Trump added in his comments at the White House. “Powering everything from AI to automobiles to advanced manufacturing, we must be able to build the chips and semiconductors that we need right here in American factories with Americans skill and American labor.”
