Donald Trump is up by nearly 20 points ahead of Joe Biden in the once-swing state of Iowa, a state that saw Obama win twice.

According to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll, 50 percent of likely voters will back Trump over Biden in the upcoming 2024 election while only 32 percent say they will support Biden come November. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has around 9 percent support found in the poll. The rest of the likely voters are split up among other third-party candidates.

The poll was of 632 likely Iowa voters surveyed between June 9-14 with a margin of error of 3.9 points. The poll comes weeks after Trump was convicted in New York on 34 felony counts of falsified business records. The last poll taken by Register had Trump up 48 to 33 percent in comparison to Biden, however, the gap has only widened since then.

A 63-year-old Waterloo resident, Donald Share, said he became a Republican because of Trump and has plans to vote for him in November. “I like (that) he doesn't take any guff from anybody, that he puts America first,” Share said. “You know, we need to take care of our own before we worry about everybody else.”

Share added that the criminal conviction only solidified his vote for Trump.

“His convictions on these charges are part of the reason my mind is made up,” Share said. “The more they try to get him out of the picture, the stronger they make him. I, for one, believe that the charges are bogus.”

Many of Trump’s supporters feel similarly and after the court decision came down, over $400 million has been raised by the Trump campaign as of early June.

Among those who said they would support Trump in the upcoming election, 76 percent of them said that their minds had been made up. Biden supporters are more locked in at 81 percent saying they have made up their minds. Among those polled, Biden's approval rating has been in decline and remains at a low of 28 percent.
