The acting attorney general, a former Trump defense lawyer, would take permanent control of the Justice Department after serving in the role since April.
In a video posted to X by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, Trump can be heard breaking the news that he will nominate Blanche for the position to replace fired Attorney General Pam Bondi.
"Tomorrow I'm instructing Dan [Scavino] and everybody else that's involved in that very complicated process, which is gonna go, I think, very quickly, that we are going to make him permanent Attorney General," Trump said in the video, which was recorded during a Rose Garden Club Dinner on Wednesday evening at the White House.
Blanche has served as legal representation for President Trump during three criminal cases brought against him in 2023 and 2024. He was nominated as deputy attorney general under Pam Bondi and was confirmed in a 52-46 vote.
During Blanche’s time as acting attorney general, he indicted former FBI Director and longtime Trump foe James Comey over his alleged threats on the president's life. Blanche's nomination comes after the high-profile firing of Pam Bondi. Her firing came amid reports that Trump was unhappy with her handling of the Epstein files and her tepid efforts to go after the president's political foes.
When asked during an April 7 DOJ press conference why the president fired Bondi, Blanche seemed disinterested.
"Nobody has any idea why the attorney general is no longer the attorney general and I'm the acting attorney general, except for President Trump," Blanche said according to Politico.
Blanche said he is "obviously honored and humbled” by the nomination and looking forward to working with senators by getting them the information they need during the confirmation process.
