"Most of those Homeland Security agents, the only training that they received was an online webinar, a two-hour online webinar, and I’m told that about half the time the sound to the webinar didn’t even work," Hawley said.
Speaking with Fox News’ Jesse Watters on Tuesday evening, Senator Josh Hawley revealed that the agents on 2024 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s security detail on the day of the Butler rally assassination attempt were pulled from child exploitation cases and placed in the detail, receiving just a two-hour online training ahead of the day.
Hawley said new information from whistleblowers has revealed that "most of the agents who were at that rally in Butler were not Secret Service agents," but instead "Homeland Security agents."
"And get this, most of those Homeland Security agents, the only training that they received was an online webinar, a two-hour online webinar, and I’m told that about half the time the sound to the webinar didn’t even work," Hawley said.
He added, "So think about this, the President of the United States, former President of the United States, Donald Trump, is sent out on stage. Most of the people there aren’t trained. They’re not qualified. They only got a webinar training, and even that didn’t work. It is absolutely outrageous."
Hawley said that the Homeland Security agents that were assigned to the rally had been pulled off of child exploitation and endangerment cases, "stuff they normally do" to be placed on Trump’s protective detail despite not normally doing such work.
"They were pulled off those cases, said 'here, you’re going to go guard the former President of the United States, watch this webinar. Oops, it doesn’t really work. That’s alright. Go out into the field anyway.' Jesse, this is a nightmare and we still have no answers."
At Trump’s July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on the stage, striking Trump in the ear and critically injuring two others. A father and former fire chief, Corey Comperatore, was killed as he tried to shield his family from the gunfire. The now-former United States Secret Service head Kimberly Cheatle resigned in the wake of the shooting, and several USSS Pittsburgh Field Office agents have been placed on leave.
It was revealed in August that Crooks had used the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club in Pennsylvania to practice shooting on May 22, with members of the DHS coming to train at the facility the day after.
