"I stand in full support and wholeheartedly agree with the statements that President Trump has made over these last few days with regards to the developments in Syria."
Her statement comes as she has been going up to Capitol Hill in order to speak to a number of different senators about her nomination ahead of the confirmation process. "I want to address the issue that's in the headlines right now. I stand in full support and wholeheartedly agree with the statements that President Trump has made over these last few days with regards to the developments in Syria," Gabbard told reporters.
"My own views and experiences have been shaped by my multiple deployments and seeing firsthand the cost of war and the threat of Islamist terrorism," Gabbard continued. "It's one of the many reasons why I appreciate President Trump's leadership and his election where he is fully committed, as he has said over and over, to bringing about an end to wars, demonstrating peace through strength and putting the national security interests and the safety, security, and freedom of the American people first."
Rebel Syrian forces, headed by the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has taken the areas of Aleppo as well as Damascus in the region, as the brutal leader of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, has fled the country. In response to the civil war occurring in the region, Trump posted on Truth Social multiple times about the situation. On Saturday, he wrote, "In any event, Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!"
Then, as Assad fled the country over the weekend, the president-elect posted again on Sunday that "Assad is gone," and added that it was due to Russia losing interest in the region due to the Ukrainian war.
"Russia and Iran are in a weakened state right now. One because of Ukraine and a bad economy, the other because of Israel and its fighting success. Likewise, Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness. They have ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians," he added. Then, in a call for peace between Russia and Ukraine, Trump added, "There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin."
Gabbard visited Syria to meet with Assad in 2017, and the travel has come under some scrutiny, in addition to Democrats and some media outlets attempting to paint Gabbard as a tool for Russia. Gabbard, however, has denied these accusations and recently received the support of hundreds of veterans across the country.
Additionally, her meeting with Assad was not of concern to her commanders. She left her military assignment in Oklahoma earlier this week to travel to the Capitol and speak with senators skeptical of her appointment.
