Winsome Sears, the first woman of color to serve as the lieutenant-governor of Virginia, has finally been given the coveted "blue check" by Twitter, meaning her account is now verified.
Sears's posts are now finally considered by the social media giant to be coming from a trustworthy source.
According to CBS News, "Sears, a U.S. Marine veteran, previously served in Virginia's House of Delegates. She was the first Black Republican woman, first female veteran and first 'legal immigrant' woman elected to that position."
The above raises questions as to why it took Twitter so long to give her proper verification status on her account, considering that she has already been an elected official for quite some time now.
Sears was recently and famously part of the campaign that unseated Democrats in the state of Virginia, which over the past couple decades had previously been trending solidly to blue. She ran alongside her fellow upstart candidate, Glenn Youngkin, who is now governor-elect of the state after roundly defeating Democrat Terry McAuliffe.
As a proudly conservative black woman, Sears has drawn her share of criticism from the mainstream media. MSNBC show host Joy Reid, in particular, implied on air that Sears was a "soft" white nationalist, to which Sears replied that she would love to go on Reid's show and debate the issue, and discuss Reid's "speaking about me behind her back."
