Two unidentified people travelling to Canada from Mexico allegedly presented fake PCR tests to board the flight, and have now been fined heavily for it.
One individual was fined $10,000 and the other $7000, respectively. Reportedly, both individuals actually tested positive for the virus, and lied about their status, presenting falsified information.
According to Transport Canada, the Canadian government considers tough measures on people returning to Canada from abroad to be a key element of preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus.
"In both cases, the individuals knowingly boarded a flight to Canada from Mexico on January 23, 2021, after having tested positive for COVID-19 only a few days before their flight," commented a spokesperson for Transport Canada.
Canadians coming in from outside of the country are currently required to obtain a negative result on a PCR test 72 hours or less before boarding the plane to Canada, or a positive test result from 14-90 days before boarding.
Controversial new measures are slated to go into effect on Monday, which would require Canadians to spend three days in a hotel at their own expense upon returning to Canada. These measures are under legal challenge, however.
