UAW president Shawn Fain met with the union's executive board to discuss its next steps should Biden, who they endorsed, lose in the presidential election.
"Donald Trump stands against everything we stand for as a society," Fain said when he endorsed Biden. Despite this endorsement, Fain is now discussing concerns with top union officials about the union’s next steps and options, especially if Biden loses, according to a report by Reuters.
Fain endorsed Biden in January after an autoworker strike last year, which resulted in wage increases for workers at Detroit carmakers. Biden was seen walking with striking walkers, the first US president to do so.
Biden has heavily courted the union, even mentioning Fain in his State of the Union address. He has continued to market himself as the most “pro-union president in US history.” Additionally, Biden met with the executive council of the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of US trade unions, on Wednesday, where Fain was present.
"I think of you as my domestic NATO—not a joke,” Biden said, while also thanking union leaders for pledging their support to his campaign.
The union's concerns over Biden's re-election prospects come amid growing calls from some Democrats for Biden to withdraw from the race and allow someone else to be the nominee. As many as 17 Democratic representatives and senators have publicly suggested that Biden should exit the race.
