Unlicensed illegal immigrant arrested for killing 9-month-old boy with car in New Jersey parking lot

An unlicensed illegal immigrant from Guatemala crashed into a New Jersey family in a grocery store parking lot, resulting in the death of a 9-month-old boy and injuries to his mother and sister.

20-year-old Maria Cobon-Guzman, a Guatemalan national living in Trenton, has been charged with five counts, including manslaughter, in connection with the crash. Cobon-Guzman has never had a driver’s license and was driving a Ford Fusion owned by Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Lazaro-Flores has been charged with knowingly creating a substantial risk of death after allowing Cobon-Guzman to drive the vehicle.

Cobon-Guzman struck Golda Chana and her 5-year-old daughter, as well as her 9-month-old son, who was being pushed in a stroller. The family was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where the baby was pronounced dead.

Following the arrest, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) filed a detainer against both Cobon-Guzman and Lazaro-Flores. The judge denied the pair bond.

According to a report by Fox News, a Department of Homeland Security official said the two women crossed the southern border illegally during the Biden administration. Lazaro-Flores had reportedly entered the US five times and had been removed from the country each time. Cobon-Guzmán entered the country once and was released, with an immigration judge approving her deportation for July 31.

Jennifer Kuhn, the mayor of Jackson Township, condemned New Jersey’s sanctuary policies following the crash.

"If our police pull somebody over and they're undocumented... they can't call the federal agencies, they can't call ICE. That needs to change," Kuhn explained to Fox News. "Condolences at this point are not enough. At this point, leadership needs to step in. And we have to do something."
