Reports of a prisoner swap deal between the United States and Iran that would have additionally released $7 billion in frozen Iranian funds has been denied by the US, Reuters reports.
Originally reported on Al Mayadeen, a Lebanese pro-Iranian TV channel, they said a mutual agreement had been met that would exchange four Americans accused of spying for four Iranian prisoners the US is holding, as well as release $7 billion in Iranian oil funds frozen by US sanctions.
"Informed source says Biden administration has agreed to release four Iranian prisoners jailed for bypassing U.S. sanctions in exchange for four American 'spies'," said the Iranian state TV report on Sunday.
An unnamed Iranian official was cited in the Al Mayadeen story, but the US government has denied such claims.
"Reports that a prisoner swap deal has been reached are not true," State Department spokesman Ned Price told Fox News. "As we have said, we always raise the cases of Americans detained or missing in Iran. We will not stop until we are able to reunite them with their families."
Al Mayadeen also stated in their report that British-Iranian national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe would also allegedly be released once the a debt on military equipment had been paid off by Britain.
