Body cam footage released from the Dexter Reed shooting in Chicago has revealed that Reed shot at police first and struck one in the arm before officers killed him at a traffic stop.

After the shooting, many outlets jumped on the story with headlines focusing on the 96 rounds that were shot at Reed, killing him in the process. According to the footage and Block Club Chicago, Reed shot at the officers first, striking one in the arm.

The incident occurred on March 21 after a traffic stop at the 3800 block of West Ferdinand Street in Chicago. This week, officials revealed that the encounter began when police pulled him over for not wearing a seat belt.

As the officers approached the car, Reed, 26, locked the door, rolled up his window, and ignored commands to stop.

“Do not roll the window up! Unlock the doors now!” an officer ordered in the interaction.

After ignoring an officer's orders to open the door, Reed fired a gun and struck an officer in the arm. Reed then attempted to drive the car forward but hit another car in the process. He then got out of the vehicle and went to its back where he was shot several times in response. He fell and then lay on the sidewalk bleeding afterwards. He was then handcuffed.

A gun was found in Reed's passenger's side seat after the incident.

Reed later died at the hospital after chest compressions failed to resuscitate him at the scene. The officer had a tourniquet applied to his wounded arm and was then treated at a local hospital.

Reed’s family members and attorneys said they want the police officers charged for crimes in the incident.

Reed’s mother claimed, "He was just riding around in his car and they killed him!" before fainting in a video after the incident.
