The chef known as "Salt Bae" caused controversy for the country of Vietnam as one of their top politicians was fed a gold-plated steak by the meme cook at the chef's upscale London restaurant. On Nov. 3, Nusret Gökçe posted the video demonstrating the cooking, meat salting, and even the feeding of the meat to Vietnamese public security minister General To Lam at Nusr-e.
To Lam was in the United Kingdom to attend the UN Climate Summit in Glasgow.
According to the BBC write-up, the gold-plated steak alone runs up a bill between $1,000 to $2,000 USD. This is in contrast to the basic wage for the minister being between $600 to $800 a month before additional "allowances."
For people who don't know the meme, Nusret Gökçe got the nickname "Salt Bae" back in January 2017 for his expert display of seasoning placement in an Instagram video that went viral across social media.
Even before the climate angle is factored into play, critics are noting the gratuitous display of wealth by the global elite. Top Vietnamese politicians eat the best and finest foods while their country’s general populace struggles to get by on the daily.
"My tax money has been used for luxury," said one commenter on the matter, according to Radio Free Asia's reporting.
The story of General To Lam ties into discussions surrounding the menu at the Glasgow climate conference. This as the entire menu had a calculated carbon footprint cost attached to it in lieu of a calorie tally. Pondering the gold steak situation comes alongside the realization that "118 Private Jets Take Leaders To COP26 Climate Summit Burning Over 1,000 Tons Of CO2," per Forbes.
Climate activist wonderkid Greta Thunberg said COP26 is a failure because it turned into a PR event instead of talking about the issues at hand.
Facebook announced Tuesday they unblocked the #saltbae hashtag after it had been blocked globally this past week. Spokespeople as of now are unwilling to comment on any potential reason why this happened, but they're investigating.
