British Columbia has declared a provincial state of emergency, becoming the third province to do so amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

The BC Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth issued the state of emergency Wednesday, at around noon PST.

Farnworth says the legislature will resume Monday, though there will be a reduced number of members to pass legislation "to ensure continuity of government and response to the outbreak."

Adrian Dix, the B.C. health minister, called the BC state of emergency a "dramatic step," as it is one that will give BC sweeping new powers. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Tuesday that the step was sparked due to an "unprecedented time in our history."

So far, BC has confirmed 186 cases of coronavirus within the province, a significant number considering the more populous provinces of Ontario and Quebec have 189 cases and 74 cases respectively.

The total cases of coronavirus in Canada now stands at 600 people. This number will almost certainly rise in the coming days and weeks.

Other provinces to declare a state of emergency include Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Alberta.
