A video from the Sheraton Dorval hotel near Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport shows the room of two women being breached from the outside after the hotel removed the locks on the doors of patrons for "emergency" purposes.
In the first video, two women who were hosting an Instagram live stream during their stay at the hotel can be seen upset and angry after their door is opened by someone outside of their room.
"Yo someone just opened our door," the women yell after a distinctive click could be heard in the background. They confronted a man in the hallway concerning the incident, but the man denied having opened the door himself.
In the second video, the woman recording shows how the manual locks on the door have either been removed or do not work. Someone attempting to breach the room only needs a viable keycard.
The video corroborates the testimony of a woman who was sexually assaulted while at the same hotel. The woman explained that she was given a leaflet upon arrival which told her she may not share videos of her stay on social media and that quarantined travelers are not allowed to use the locks on their doors, although the woman said that the locks were removed all together in her room.
"This will allow access to your room in an emergency. The site has 24 hour surveillance. You are safe," the leaflet said.
It is unclear how removing locks on the doors makes quarantined travelers safer.
The Liberal government announced new regulations last month whereby travelers arriving in Canada, whether they are Canadian or not, would be required to quarantine in hotels for three days before they could return home for the rest of their quarantine.
The move was criticized by opposition MPs who questioned whether it was truly safer to quarantine in hotels rather than at home. Others have also criticized the measure as a violation of civil liberties, arguing that it amounts to detention without trial.
Thus far, two sexual assaults have taken place in the quarantine hotels, one of which was committed by a quarantine officer. The sexual assaults have heightened calls by the Conservatives to discard the hotel quarantine rules.
Additional footage from one of the quarantine hotels shows quarantined travelers expressing frustration with the lack of food available.
This latest footage is just the latest example of mismanagement at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's quarantine hotels.
