On Power and Politics, Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau could not definitively answer whether the Trudeau Liberals would support a Taliban-led Afghanistan.
"The US had warned the Taliban [that] if Afghanistan was taken by force [it] would not be recognized internationally," said the host. "Will Canada refuse to recognize a Taliban government?"
Minister Garneau replied: "Right now, it is early days. We want to see what happens."
"The country has essentially surrendered to the Taliban," he added. "The Taliban is saying it wants to run as a government. But we’re going to wait and see, so it’s too early to answer that question."
"You're waiting to see?" The host followed up on her question. "Are you going to treat them with any credibility?"
"Well, we have to see how they behave, since they have taken over the country," replied Garneau. "Certainly, their behaviour was totally unacceptable for the short time they were in charge when the Russians left twenty years ago. So, we’ll wait and see."
