During a press conference Friday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki fielded numerous questions regarding the Department of Justice's announcement that they filed a lawsuit against Georgia’s election integrity laws.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Friday that the Department of justice would be suing Georgia over the controversial bill SB 202 passed in March of this year.

"The rights of all eligible citizens to vote are the central pillars of our democracy," Garland said in a news conference at the Justice Department. "They are the rights from which all other rights ultimately flow."

In response to questioning on Biden's stance on the lawsuit and voting rights, Psaki stated "this is going to be a fight of his presidency. He believes that voting is a fundamental right of the American people, he's going to use every lever at his disposal to advocate for that."

When asked whether the president or the White House was consulted or played a role in the decision, Psaki said that while they were not consulted, it was "consistent" with the president's stance to protect the right to vote.

"It certainly is consistent with the president's commitment, to the administration, and the guidance he’s given publicly and directly to use every lever at your disposal to ensure we are protecting the fundamental right to vote across the country," said Psaki.

One reporter asked Psaki about accusations that the Biden administration was "weaponizing the Justice Department to undermine election integrity."

"If you have such a fear of making it easier and more accessible for people to vote, then I would ask you what you're so afraid of."

"Does the White House see the Justice Department as its only real way of going on offense against some of these sweeping efforts across the country to implement voting restrictions.. as opposed to legislation?" asked the reporter.

"No, we don't," replies Psaki. She stated that the Justice Department would continue to do work on election integrity, with nominees that Biden appointed that have strong ties to working on those issues, adding that the White House would continue to push for federal legislation relating to the issue.

Psaki stated that the White House would continue to "engage with local activists" and local legislators on the issue.

"We’re going to fight this fight on many fronts," said Psaki.

In response to questioning regarding a comment from Biden stating that he was going to get out to advocate for voting rights, and when he would begin this, Psaki said "the president is gonna speak to all of you and to the public next week about his continuing commitment to voting rights, expanding access to voting rights; something that he's worked on for decades through his public career, and I expect he’ll have more to say then."
