"In Canada, the right is secure, but what we're seeing as a trend and as a problem is that access is in question," Singh said on Tuesday.

New Democrat leader Jagmeet Singh gave his two cents on the unfolding situation regarding Roe v Wade in the United States.

"I want to start off today just reflecting on the leak in the United States and what it must feel like for people in the United States, for women, to wake up and see their fundamental right to have a legal abortion potentially and very dangerously threatened," Singh said in Ottawa on Tuesday.

"It looks like it will be overturned, and that's something that's deeply concerning," he said.

"We know that when abortion rights are denied or abortion services are denied, the result is women die. It's deeply concerning to see that happen.

"In Canada, the right is secure, but what we're seeing as a trend and as a problem is that access is in question," Singh continued.

"Many communities do not have access to legal abortions... Women have to drive hundreds of kilometers. So that's something we have to continue to fight.

"... The right is important, but what's more important than the right is access to the right," he said.

On Monday evening, a draft opinion document was leaked from the Supreme Court in the United States saying that the court has voted to overturn Roe v Wade.

The opinion's author, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito wrote, "Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences."
