If there was any doubt that the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz ticket was going to carry ahead with Joe Biden's initiatives while dragging them further left, Walz has assuaged those concerns. In an interview with MSNBC's The ReidOut in 2022, Walz said that "there's no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech, especially around our democracy."

"I think we need to push back on this," Walz told The ReidOut's guest host, "there's no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech especially around our democracy."

Walz didn't define what misinformation is, exactly, but said that "it's insidious" and that "misinformation" has been prevalent regarding elections, J6, and Covid. As he discussed voting procedure, he said that the goal in Minnesota was to "make it as easy as possible to vote." This includes automatic voter registration and printing ballots in multiple languages. "It's an exciting time that democracy prevails," he said.

Walz said that he would crack down on "voter intimidation," and it was in that context that he said the First Amendment is not absolute. His claim is that there is too much "misinformation" surrounding voting. However, Douglass Mackey, a meme maker, was prosecuted for posting a joke about voting and how to vote. Mackey shared a meme that said people could text their vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016. He was convicted of violating rights.

Kristina Wong, also in 2016, posted a video instructing Trump voters to vote on the wrong day, the day after the election that year. She was not prosecuted, the assumption being that everyone knew she was joking around. When prosecuting Mackey, the Department of Justice could not find a single person who believed his post or thought they could vote for Hillary via text. He was sentenced to prison time anyway.

Walz's comments on the First Amendment echo claims that Biden has made that "no right is absolute." In Biden's case, he was specifically talking about gun control and the Second Amendment. Walz has extended those guidelines to the First Amendment, on which all other amendments rely.

Walz has made it a priority to have Minnesota be a "trans refuge" for minors seeking sex changes and has condemned himself for his white male privilege while making himself chair of the board on diversity, equity and inclusion that he established when he took office as Minnesota governor.
