White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters in a press conference on Friday that Nex Benedict, a nonbinary-identified student, committed suicide strongly suggesting it was due to bullying for Benedict's LGBTQ identity.

Jean-Pierre reiterated a statement from President Joe Biden that focused on bullying against LGBTQ-identified individuals as well.

"Bullying is completely unacceptable and it is on all of us to take reports of bullying seriously," the press secretary said.

On Thursday Biden released a statement focusing on bullying as well in relation to the death of Benedict which was ruled a suicide.

"Jill and I are heartbroken by the recent loss of Nex Benedict," the statement began. "Every young person deserves to have the fundamental right and freedom to be who they are, and feel safe and supported at school and in their communities. Nex Benedict, a kid who just wanted to be accepted, should still be here with us today."

The statement went on, "In memory of Nex, we must all recommit to our work to end discrimination and address the suicide crisis impacting too many nonbinary and transgender children. Bullying is hurtful and cruel, and no one should face the bullying that Nex did."

After a fight at school, Benedict went to the hospital and was released to go home. The next day Benedict was found unconscious on the floor and passed away later that day in the hospital.

Democrats and others on the left have painted the death as resulting from the fight with girls in school, but it was later ruled a suicide
