When asked about help for seniors, Trudeau said other groups of Canadians were a priority

With provincial governments stepping up to the plate, some Canadians are wondering when the federal Liberal government will come through for them—seniors, in particular.

Thus far, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has remained somewhat quiet on whether or not the elderly will be receiving financial aid to help them get by in these times, especially with seniors being the most at-risk population.

Trudeau's government has dished out hundreds of billions for small and medium sized businesses, students, and those who've lost their jobs. And while Trudeau has announced funding to seniors, the sum is pennies compared to other demographics.

Earlier this month, Trudeau announced that $9 million would be going to aid seniors via programs such as meals on wheels, to ensure that seniors are able to access meals safely.

Trudeau was asked at Monday's press conference when seniors would be getting their fair share. Seniors have, of course, paid taxes for longer than any other demograpic, and deserve to be taken care of after building this country.

Trudeau responded with a vague, indirect response: “We knew that moving forward on replacing people who lost and were counting on their paycheques through COVID-19 was the priority,” he said.

“That’s why we moved forward with the CERB and the wage subsidy which launches today. We then recognized that students who often start their summer jobs in early May after finishing their term post-secondary education needed help as well, which is why we’re moving forward on that.”

“We have moved forward on a number of things to ensure that they get supports, but we’re also looking at further supports specifically for the most vulnerable low-income seniors who are truly challenged," said Trudeau, continuing on to say that measures would be coming "soon."
