Whoopi repeats claims that Holocaust was 'not about race,' says Nazis targeted the 'mentally defective'

"Remember who they were killing first," Goldberg said. "They were not killing racial; they were killing physical. They were killing people they considered to be mentally defective. And then they made this decision."

In an interview released on Saturday with the UK publication The Times, The View co-host and actress Whoopi Goldberg doubled down on her controversial comments about the Holocaust that got her suspended from the show in February when she claimed "The Holocaust isn't about race."

During the discussion with The Times' Janice Turner, Goldberg attempted to clarify her controversial comments by again arguing that Jews aren't a race. "My best friend said, 'Not for nothing there is no box on the census for the Jewish race. So that leads me to believe that we’re probably not a race,'" Goldberg, who's real name is Caryn Elaine Johnson, said.

"But the point here, I say, is [the] Nazis saw Jews as a race," Turner pushed back.

Goldberg countered with "Yes, but that's the killer, isn't it? The oppressor is telling you what you are. Why are you believing them? They're Nazis. Why believe what they're saying?"

Turner replied, "But since the Nazis devised racial laws aimed specifically at Jews, wasn't the Holocaust about race?"

"It wasn't originally," the Sister Act star replied.

The assertion of her views contradicts an apology she made after receiving backlash and a suspension for saying that the Holocaust wasn't about race, but about "man's inhumanity to man" on The View.

"But it is indeed about race because Hitler and the Nazis considered Jews to be an inferior race," said the co-host.

"Now, words matter and mine are no exception. I regret my comments, as I said, and I stand corrected. I also stand with the Jewish people as they know and y'all know, because I've always done that," she said.

Now, she seems to have gone back to her previous way of thinking.

"Remember who they were killing first," Goldberg continued saying to Turner. "They were not killing racial; they were killing physical. They were killing people they considered to be mentally defective. And then they made this decision."

The interviewer once again pushed back, with, "But the Nazis measured the heads and noses of Jews to 'prove' they were a distinct race."

"They did that to black people too. But it doesn't change the fact that you could not tell a Jew on a street. You could find me. You couldn't find them," Goldberg argued.

"That was the point I was making," she added about her remarks on The View. "But you would have thought that I'd taken a big old stinky dump on the table, butt naked."
