31-year-old Jamica Simone Mills faces the charge in Milwaukee County Circuit Court in connection with the death of her friend Ariel Spillner. The charge includes a dangerous weapon modifier, which could add up to five years to a potential sentence.
The incident took place around 9:43 pm. Mills reportedly became paranoid that Spillner might stab her with scissors intended for grooming a dog. She later admitted to investigators that Spillner had made no threats and that she never actually saw the scissors.
According to the criminal complaint, Mills retrieved a Ruger .380 handgun from her bedroom and shot Spillner when Spillner “made a hand motion.” Mills also accidentally shot herself in the stomach.
Police found Mills with a gunshot wound and Spillner unresponsive. Spillner was pronounced dead at 9:52 pm.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Spillner died from a gunshot wound to the chest that struck major organs. According to a report from WISN 12, investigators recovered the handgun, two bullet casings, and blood-stained clothing consistent with a close-range shot.
Mills initially provided varying accounts of the incident but eventually confessed, stating she “did not mean to kill” her friend. Spillner was enrolled in the School of Pharmacy at Concordia University in Wisconsin at the time of her death.
A court date has not been set. If convicted, Mills could face up to 60 years in prison for the murder.
