After Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber released a public letter stating that the storied Ivy League school is racist, the US Department of Education informed the school that if it was actually discriminatory it would be in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and subject to a loss of federal funding.
The Department of Education said that Princeton University would be subject to investigation for potentially violating the act, specifically Title VI, according to the Washington Examiner.
Eisgruber's letter claimed that "racism and the damage it does to people of color persist at Princeton" and that "racist assumptions" are "embedded in structures of the University itself." According to the DOE, this would mean the school is ineligible for federal money.
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 declares that "no person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
The University receives millions in federal funding, and if the school is truly found to be racist, as its woke, whistleblowing university head states, it would be subject to defunding.
"Based on its admitted racism, the U.S. Department of Education (“Department”) is concerned Princeton’s nondiscrimination and equal opportunity assurances in its Program Participation Agreements from at least 2013 to the present may have been false," the letter reads.
The investigation is asking for the evidence Princeton used in its determination that the university is racist. This includes a detailed "spreadsheet identifying each person who has, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, been excluded from participation in, been denied the benefits of, or been subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance as a result of the Princeton racism or 'damage' referenced in the President’s Letter."
The Department of Education says this investigation is not political but rather a response to a self-admitted violation of federal civil rights protections.
On Thursday, the University publicly responded to the investigation by denying it has violated the Civil Rights Act, and was instead merely pointing out "systemic racism" that does not violate any laws.
"The University will respond to the Department of Education’s letter in due course. It is unfortunate that the Department appears to believe that grappling honestly with the nation’s history and the current effects of systemic racism runs afoul of existing law."
