Eleven members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus issued a warning to Speaker Mike Johnson, expressing dissatisfaction with his leadership despite supporting his re-election to the role late last week.

In a letter sent to Republican House members, the group, led by Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris and Representative Chip Roy, outlined their concerns about Johnson's leadership and their expectations moving forward.

“Speaker Johnson must prove he will not fail to enact President Trump’s bold agenda,” the letter stated.

The members explained that they backed Johnson’s speakership because of their “steadfast support of President Trump and to ensure the timely certification of his electors,” but added, “We did this despite our sincere reservations regarding the Speaker’s track record over the past 15 months.”

The letter emphasized policy priorities that the group believes Johnson must advance, including border security, inflation reduction, and legislation prohibiting members of Congress from trading stocks, according to Politico.

“Personalities can be debated later, but right now there is zero room for error on the policies the American people demanded when they voted for President Trump — the ones necessary to save the country,” the letter read.

The group criticized Johnson for not committing to a number of principles, such as ensuring that no bills advance without the support of a majority of Republicans and avoiding reliance on Democrat votes for passage.

They also stated that Johnson should have committed to “not increase federal borrowing before real spending cuts are agreed to and in place.” This follows a December vote on a short-term spending bill that included a debt ceiling increase. While President-elect Trump encouraged Republicans to raise the debt limit to prevent Democrats from using it as leverage once he takes office, that version of the spending bill ultimately failed. Dozens of Republicans opposed it over concerns about spending increases without corresponding cuts, per The Hill

Other signatories of the letter include Representatives Andy Biggs, Scott Perry, Clay Higgins, Michael Cloud, Andy Ogles, Eli Crane, Eric Burlison, Ralph Norman, and Andrew Clyde.
