114,000 New Yorkers fled city in 2025 ahead of Mamdani taking Gracie Mansion

The Big Apple's population declined last year by 114,000 people across all income levels, according to a new study from the Citizens’ Budget Commission that was released this week.

According to data from the Citizens’ Budget Commission that was put out in a report on Monday, 114,000 people fled New York in 2025. At the same time, 66,000 people came to the city from international locations. The natural change (births minus deaths) was +36,000.

The study explained that the overall population declined and that “across all income levels, more people moved out of New York City than moved in." The moves from domestic New Yorkers came at the same time as when Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani campaigned and then won the election for mayor based on promises of more "affordability" as well as taxing the rich and wealthy.

The study also found that NYC lost more middle-income residents than high-income residents. Mamdani had promised to tackle high cost of living, which has crushed many New Yorkers. He has also chased the issue of rent freezes, which has landlords running scared.

The flight of people from New York has also been taking place as other blue areas have been declining in population. The San Francisco Chronicle reported in March that "San Francisco metro area’s population failed to grow again in 2025, despite a swelling boom in AI."

In response to the flight from New York, Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul has been begging for wealthy New Yorkers to come back to the state to support New York's "generous social programs" with their tax dollars.
