Former Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be the leading contender for the Democratic Party’s 2028 presidential nomination, according to a new poll.

A survey from Morning Consult found that Harris, the failed 2024 Democratic nominee, has the support of 36 percent of Democratic voters and Democratic-leaning independents eligible to vote in the 2028 primary. Harris holds a significant lead over former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who came in second with 10 percent. Buttigieg recently announced he would not be running for statewide office in Michigan in 2028.

No other potential candidates reached double-digit support. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom each garnered 5 percent. Businessman and “Shark Tank” star Mark Cuban, along with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, received 4 percent.

Other names included in the poll—Sen. Cory Booker, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Gov. Andy Beshear, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar—received minimal support.

Speculation continues over whether Harris will pursue a run for California governor instead of trying to run for president again. Harris would be seeking to replace the seat of incumbent Gavin Newsom, who is barred by term limits from running again. Reports previously indicated that her aides and close allies are weighing her options between a gubernatorial bid or another presidential campaign in 2028, though Harris has not publicly indicated her plans. A Politico report stated that she has been in contact with allies and supporters as she considers her political future and a decision could be made in the coming months.

Harris suffered a significant defeat to President Donald Trump in the 2024 election, losing both the popular vote and every swing state despite raising over a billion dollars from Democratic donors.
