A 44-year-old woman was injured last week in the Bronx after two teenagers opened fire nearby while riding bicycles.
The victim was struck in the arm after the pair of teens opened fire around 6:40 pm. She was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in a New York Police Department cruiser and was listed in stable condition.
Authorities believe the woman was not specifically targeted in the shooting. However, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear and is under investigation by law enforcement.
Police released surveillance footage Monday showing the two teenagers on Citi Bikes fleeing toward Park Avenue after the shooting took place. One suspect wore a black sweatshirt and gray sweatpants, while the other wore a black t-shirt and blue jeans. Police are asking anyone with information regarding the suspects to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
The incident is yet another in gun crimes carried out in the city by those suspected to be under the age of 18. Just one week ago, a 16-year-old student in New York City was arrested after posing online threats about carrying out a school shooting. The student was found on campus with a loaded semi-automatic handgun, and the NYPD was able to stop him before any violence took place.
In 2024, the NYPD reported 40 incidents involving shooters who were minors. According to an April report by the New York Post, the number of teen shooters has risen by 114 percent since 2018.
