A poll conducted prior to Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race revealed that 49 percent of Americans don’t think Kamala Harris would make a good president.

The poll, conducted by AP/NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and released on July 17, found that 30 percent of Americans think she would make a good president, and an additional 20 percent said they didn’t know enough to say. Those who said she would be a good president included 58 percent of Democrats and 20 percent of independents.

Of those who said she would not make a good president, 22 percent of Democrats and 39 percent of independents responded as such. Among Republicans, 87 percent said that Harris would not make a good president. An additional 20 percent of Democrats and 40 percent of independents did not know enough to have an opinion one way or the other.

The poll was conducted between July 11 and 15 of 1,253 American adults and has a margin of error of 3.8 percent. The poll was conducted prior to Biden announcing that he would be ending his reelection bid and partially before the attempted assassination of Trump.

Biden announced in an X post on Sunday that "I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."

In a follow up post, Biden endorsed Harris, writing, "My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this."

In a statement late Sunday, Harris announced her campaign for president. "I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination," she wrote, later adding, "I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win."
