After President Joe Biden quit the presidential race on Sunday, he endorsed Kamala Harris for president. Biden chose Harris to be his running mate in 2020 after promising he would select a black woman to join him on the ticket. As she ran for president in her own right that year, the best she did was gain 3% in polls.

"My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," he said.

Harris recently spoke to Democrat donors in an effort to assuage their fears about Biden's mental capacity in continuing his presidential campaign. Harris allies have mobilized to make sure that she's top of the ticket in the event that Biden drops out, which he did on Sunday. They likely intend to highlight her experience as vice president over the past four years, though it's unclear exactly what's she's done.

One of the biggest takeaways from her years in office has been that she has said, repeatedly, that she can "see what can be, unburdened by what might have been." No one really knows what that means.

Harris has not been particularly popular over the past four years. When she was tasked with being the border "czar," her office said that wasn't her job, instead focusing on dealing with the Northern Triangle countries in Central America from which many illegal immigrants come. Over the past few years, there's been a global uptick. She did not visit the US-Mexico border during that time.

In 2021, she met with protesters on her way to see the Guatemalan president and complained about Republican attacks against her. "On the issue of Republicans' political attacks, or criticism, or even concerns, the reason I'm here in Guatemala as my first trip as vice president of the United States, is because this is one of our highest priorities," she said.

"And I came here to be here on the ground, to speak with the leader of this nation, around what we can do in a way that is significant, is tangible, and has real results. And I will continue to be focused on that kind of work as opposed to grand gestures," Harris said during her remarks.

Biden has already received electoral votes in primaries going back to the beginning of the year. He will have to release his delegates in order for those delegates to vote for another candidate. On abortion, Harris has said she backs the overturned Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade. On climate change, she has said "It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging. And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history." That "investment" was called the "Inflation Reduction Act."
