"We continue to see that the vast majority of our hate crimes are antisemitic in nature. In fact, in the first quarter of 2026, more than half of all confirmed hate crimes, or 55 percent, were antisemitic."
"Confirmed hate crimes increased nearly 12 percent this quarter citywide. We continue to see that the vast majority of our hate crimes are antisemitic in nature. In fact, in the first quarter of 2026, more than half of all confirmed hate crimes, or 55 percent, were antisemitic, despite Jews only making up approximately 10 percent of the population of New York City."
While on the campaign trail, over 650 rabbis from across the country signed onto an open letter warning that Mamdani represented a normalization of antisemitism. The letter stated, "When public figures like New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani refuse to condemn violent slogans, deny Israel’s legitimacy, and accuse the Jewish state of genocide, they, in the words of New York Board of Rabbis president Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch, 'delegitimize the Jewish community and encourage hostility toward Judaism and Jews.'"
As part of his actions on day one of his administration, Mamdani issued an executive order revoking, among many things, Eric Adams’ adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. The definition states that some forms of criticism against Israel are antisemitic, including claims that deny the Jewish people the right to self-determination or characterize Israel’s existence as inherently racist.
On the campaign trail, Mamdani refused to condemn the phrase "globalize the intifada," a phrase commonly used by anti-Israel agitators. Fellow socialist Bernie Sanders, who endorsed Mamdani, told the candidate to be more cautious on the topic of Israel, that he should explain that his criticism is not antisemitic, and to "not let himself seem like he’s minimizing the fear Jews in New York and elsewhere feel from the threat of hate against them."
