74 percent of Americans do not think congressional Democrats have the right priorities.
The CNN poll, conducted by SSRS, found that overall, 74 percent of Americans do not think congressional Democrats have the right priorities. Looking at just members of the Democrat Party and Democrat-leaning independents, 55 percent said the lawmakers of their party did not have the right priorities. The poll was conducted between March 26 and 30 and has a margin of error of 4.8 percent.
CNN Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten noted the trend going back to other midterm years in which the Republican Party was the one in power, with Democrats showing double-digit net support of their congressional leaders. In 2026, approval is down four percentage points.
"Even Democrats don't like their own leaders when it comes to Congress, and overall, of course, the numbers are just absolutely awful. So Democrat and Democrat crime, absolutely. This, to me, screams again, primary challenges across the map, and it screams to me, ‘Hey, when it comes to those next leadership elections, maybe something might be cooking,’" Enten said.
In recent weeks, funding for the Department of Homeland Security, including funding for the TSA, have been held hostage by Democrats in the Senate. The party has taken issue with the DHS funding also going to ICE and Border Patrol, both of which are already funded under Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill. A deal that passed through the Senate for a second time on Thursday did not include the Democrats' demands for reforms to ICE.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a recent interview that Democrats held up the funding "because we wanted, as I mentioned before, to reform ICE and CPB, which are lawless. The American people are totally on our side, I think, by two to one or close to that." When asked about the fact that the two agencies are already funded, Schumer said, "Well, if they put funding in from their from their other bills, and want to keep funding a lawless ICE, a lawless CPB that creates chaos in our cities, it's on their back. We're not going to participate in that."
The lack of funding has meant that TSA agents have gone without paychecks, leading to increased callouts and quitting. Wait times for security lines at the airport stretched hours long before Trump ordered ICE to assist in the matter.
