6-year-old South Carolina boy defends sister as unhinged mother stabs them 50 times

“Dawson’s got that kind of love for everybody. He takes after my son in that department. I think he was just probably trying to protect her,” the boy's grandmother said.

“Dawson’s got that kind of love for everybody. He takes after my son in that department. I think he was just probably trying to protect her,” the boy's grandmother said.

A 6-year-old boy protected his 3-year-old sister as his mother allegedly tried to attack her with a knife. Both children suffered numerous injuries and remain in stable condition.

The incident took place on September 26 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The children’s grandmother, Jan Marie Mull, told The US Sun that her grandson Dawson intervened as his mother, 35-year-old Taylor Gosnell, attacked his younger sister.

“The only thing I can visualize why Dawson had more injuries than Hazel was Dawson was trying to protect Hazel,” the grandmother told the outlet.

Gosnell allegedly stabbed her two children nearly 50 times. The children suffered lacerations to the bone. Dawson, who faced the majority of the injuries, may be facing an amputation as a result.

Police discovered the children alone and covered in blood after Dawson called his grandmother and told her that he was hungry. A welfare check was conducted, and Gosnell returned to the residence afterward and appeared distressed. She was taken to an ambulance for evaluation but attempted to flee and had to be restrained. She was eventually cleared and released from the hospital. Gosnell has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility without bond.

Mull, whose deceased son is the father of the children, said she was “floored” upon learning about the attack. “I couldn’t breathe. Honest to God, I could not breathe. I was freaking floored,” Mull said.

She added that the attack was shocking because she had  “never known [Taylor] to beat or abuse these kids” and never saw bruising or injuries.

“Dawson’s got that kind of love for everybody. He takes after my son in that department. I think he was just probably trying to protect her,” she said.

“I’m going to be honest, the grandma side of me wants to put a bullet right between her eyes,” she said of the mother of her grandchildren. “But the Christian side of me wants to forgive her. So, I’m kind of on a line here.”

“I just don’t know how anybody could do this to children. Not just my grandchild, children in general,” she added.
