As political leaders in Chicago and Illinois have been rejecting potential help with law enforcement from the Trump administration, 54 people were shot and 7 were killed over Labor Day weekend in Chicago. Donald Trump slammed Illinois Governor JB Pritzker over the mass amounts of crime as the president has been pushing to crack down on crime in the Windy City.

Trump posted to Truth Social, noting the long weekend's violence, "The last two weekends were similar. Chicago is the worst and most dangerous city in the World, by far. Pritzker needs help badly, he just doesn’t know it yet. I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, and soon. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

In a follow-up post, he called the city the "murder capital of the world." The shootings in Chicago were a series of unrelated incidents. Police said that the majority of the incidents also did not see anyone taken into custody, per Fox News.

Trump has suggested that he may deploy the National Guard to Chicago, as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, to crack down on crime and illegal immigration. The shootings over the weekend have resulted in the deaths of at least three men and two women. Two other victims have not been specified. The victims' specific identities have not been released.

Pritzker, as well as Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, have both pushed back against Trump's suggestion that he may deploy the National Guard or send in ICE agents to the city. "This executive order makes it emphatically clear that this president is not going to come in and deputize our police department," Johnson said on Saturday, as he signed an order prohibiting local police from working with federal offices.

"We will protect our Constitution, we will protect our city, and we will protect our people," Johnson said. "We do not want to see tanks in our streets. We do not want to see families ripped apart. We do not want grandmothers thrown into the back of unmarked vans. We don't want to see homeless Chicagoans harassed or disappeared by federal agents."

Pritzker has also called a potential use of the National Guard in Chicago to crack down on crime an "attack on the American people."

Chicago has struggled with high rates of crime for years. Over the July 4 weekend this year, 55 people were shot and six were killed. This year, there have been 272 homicides in the city. Those deaths include 225 deadly shootings.
