70 percent of Democrats support legislation to award amnesty to illegal immigrants who are in the United States and allow them to become permanent residents, according to a new poll. The poll also found that nearly half of all likely voters say Trump's handling of illegal immigration is "too harsh."

A recent poll from Rasmussen Reports found that 50 percent of likely voters overall support legislation to grant amnesty for illegal immigrants. 22 percent of Americans strongly support the position. The poll was conducted between October 12 and 14 of 1,177 likely voters and had a margin of error of 3 percent.

Those who took the survey were asked, "In general, would you support or oppose legislation to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants and allow them to become permanent US residents?" 70 percent of Democrats agreed with amnesty, and 63 percent of Republicans opposed it as a general measure.

The survey also tracked Americans' views on Trump's handling of illegal immigration in the United States, which was also divided. Those who took the poll were asked, “In general, have the immigration policies of the Trump administration been too harsh, about right, or not harsh enough?”

47 percent of voters said that Trump’s immigration policies have been too harsh, 32 percent said they were just right, 17 percent said they are not harsh enough.

72 percent of Democrats rejected Trump’s polices, calling them too harsh, and only 18 percent of GOP voters said the same. Independents were divided, with 48 percent saying Trump is too harsh on the immigration issue.

Those taking the poll were also asked about their views on mass deportations. 69 percent of Republicans support the policy while 65 percent of Democrats oppose it. The poll results come as the Trump administration has been ramping up efforts to crack down on illegal immigration in different cities around the country, going after what the administration has called the "worst of the worst," or illegal immigrants who have come to the US and committed more crimes or are part of gang and cartel organizations.
