An 80-year-old grandmother was stabbed and killed in a Walgreens parking lot on Saturday by a criminal released on bond.

Rosalie Cook, a widow who lived on her own, was on her way to a local Walgreens in Houston to get her prescription when Randy Lewis, 38, stabbed Cook in the chest, killing her.

"What makes me angry is this suspect stabbed an 80-year-old woman then goes down, rifles through her stuff and tries to steal her car," said Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.

Lewis was later killed after a short confrontation with police. Houston police say that Lewis rushed out of Cook's car with the knife before being shot twice.

"This is tragic, but the most tragedy here is that a woman has died from a guy who attacked her for no other reason other than to steal from her and carjack her," Acevedo said.

According to KTRK, Lewis' bail was waived on April 30, 2019 after he was charged with assaulting a public worker transferring him to the county jail.

Lewis would then be found "temporarily incompetent" following mental examination in October 2019, when he was then committed to a mental facility. Lewis was released from the Royal Personal Care Home on May 1, 2020.

Lewis is known by police, having been arrested 67 times.
