A police officer from Abbotsford has died following an incident in Nelson, British Columbia, according to CTV News.

Const. Allan Young intervened when he saw someone “causing a disturbance in the roadway” on Thursday. He was off-duty at the time close to Baker street and Josephine street.

When he stepped in, “a physical altercation ensued,” leaving the 55-year-old with life-threatening injuries.

Abbotsford Police department Chief Const. Mike Serr confirmed Young’s death in a post to Twitter on Wednesday.

"He's remembered by all for his smile and infectious personality," read the post. "RIP brother—you made a difference."

Young’s death was also confirmed by Nelson police who arrested a 26-year-old who is now up against charges of aggravated assault.
